What this guide is for
For curious people who want to understand recurring outcomes in organizations, technology, cities and the natural world. The aim is to make mechanisms legible, invite careful comparisons and support better questions about change.
How the material is built
The first edition combines a research review of foundational and selected contemporary work with a supplied systems-theory compendium. The compendium informed the eight-pattern field guide and the three laboratory briefs. Explanations, diagrams and simulation implementations were developed for this site.
Model specifications were revised where needed to keep units, accumulation and equilibrium consistent. Numerical claims without a verified basis—such as a universally optimal buffer size or fixed policy effect—are not treated as empirical findings. Each lab publishes its assumptions and exports its computed values.
Our editorial commitments
- Distinguish observations, mathematical results, simulations and conceptual frameworks.
- Link substantial research claims to their sources and record limits in reading depth.
- Label illustrative examples and model outputs, rather than dressing them as measured facts.
- Ask who defines success, who is included and who bears the consequences.
- Treat analogies as propositions to test, not explanations by themselves.
What this first edition covers
Twelve concepts, eight recurring patterns, six evidence-led stories, an intellectual map, a leverage-point explorer and three interactive labs. It is a selective introduction, not an exhaustive account of systems science or a systematic literature review.
Privacy & the experiments
The experiments run in your browser. They require no account, send no simulation inputs to a server, and let you download results directly. Your explored-pattern checklist, daily-game answers and streak history, and motion preference are stored only in this browser when storage is available. You can clear game history in the game’s privacy controls. You can clear the checklist on the Patterns page. Quiz answers and simulation settings are not sent to a server. The daily field note rotates through eight existing patterns at your local midnight; it is not a claim of newly published research each day. The RSS feed lists published guides and stories. This site adds no analytics or advertising scripts. Hosting services may process ordinary technical request data.
