+−− · delay+−ProblemSymptom reliefCapabilityLasting response
Simplified causal sketch. + means a same-direction influence; − means an opposite-direction influence, other things equal. An arrow proposes a relationship to investigate.

The mechanism

Two responses address the same problem. One works quickly on the symptom; the other builds a slower capability. A dependency forms when using the quick response also erodes the capability or crowds out its development. The distinctive claim is that connection, not simply the presence of a temporary solution.

An everyday version

Imagine a manager repeatedly taking over a difficult task. The work gets finished, but if the team loses opportunities to practice and receive feedback, more tasks may require rescue. The relevant question is whether intervention replaces learning or enables it.

What to look for

Measure independent problem-solving ability over time. Does it decline as rescues grow? Is there protected time and support for learning? Would the team have developed the capacity without intervention, or are essential resources missing?

Where could you intervene?

Use relief to create space for capability. Make learning, handover and an exit condition part of the intervention.
